First Survival Kit with useful Spanish Phrases for Visiting Spain
Are you planning a trip to Spain? ¡Estupendo! Whether you’re heading to the beaches of Valencia, the streets of Madrid, or the mountains of Granada, having a few key Spanish phrases can make your experience smoother and more enjoyable. Here are some essential expressions and cultural tips to help you during your adventure:

Getting Around
When asking for directions or transportation help, it’s polite to start with “Perdona” or “Disculpa” — both mean “excuse me.” Spaniards appreciate friendliness and respect!
- ¿Cómo se va al centro? – How do you get to the city center?
This is a common, impersonal way to ask for directions. Locals will usually be happy to point you in the right direction. - ¿Hay una parada de taxis por aquí cerca? – Is there a taxi stop near here?
- ¿La playa está lejos de aquí? – Is the beach far from here?
- ¿Está libre? – Is it free?
You can use this for a seat, a dressing room, or a taxi. For example, if you see a cab, ask the driver: ¿Está libre? - ¿Me llevas a esta dirección, por favor? – Can you take me to this address, please?
At the Hotel
Whether you’re staying in a luxury hotel or a cozy hostel, knowing how to talk about your reservation or room is key.
- Tengo una reserva a nombre de… – I have a reservation under the name…
- ¿A qué hora es el check out? / el desayuno? – What time is check-out? / breakfast?
- Una habitación individual/doble – A single/double room
- ¿La habitación da a la calle? Da a un patio – Does the room face the street? It faces a courtyard
If you need to report a problem, don’t worry — you can do it politely:
- Perdona, el aire acondicionado no funciona – Excuse me, the air conditioning doesn’t work
- ¿Dónde está el mando para el ventilador? – Where is the remote for the fan?
- Disculpa, ¿tenéis secador del pelo? – Excuse me, do you have a hair dryer?
- Perdona, la toalla está sucia / el grifo no funciona / el agua no sale caliente
Excuse me, the towel is dirty / the tap doesn’t work / the water doesn’t come out hot
If someone apologizes or there’s a delay, a calm response goes a long way:
- No te preocupes, no pasa nada – Don’t worry, it’s no big deal
- No hay prisa – There’s no rush
Renting Things
Want to rent a bike and explore the city or surf the Mediterranean?
- Hola, ¿puedo alquilar… un coche / una bici / una tabla? – Hi, can I rent a car / a bike / a board?
- Aquí tienes mi documentación – Here is my identification / papers
- Ya está, eso es todo – That’s it, that’s all
- Muy amable – Very kind of you (a lovely way to thank someone)
- ¡Hasta luego! – See you later!
Final Tip:
Always smile and use “Gracias” liberally! Spaniards value friendliness and you’ll get warmer responses if you make the effort to speak a little Spanish.
