¡A por ellos, oé! ( Let’s go get them, ole!)
A rallying cry (grito de guerra), very common across Spain before and during matches. Oé is a chant filler, like olé, used for rhythm.
Player Positions (Posiciones)
- El portero – Goalkeeper.
El portero paró el penalti (The goalkeeper saved the penalty.) - La defensa – Defender
La defensa fue muy sólida (The defense was very solid.) - El centrocampista – Midfielder
El centrocampista dio una gran asistencia. (The midfielder gave a great assist.) - El delantero – Forward / Striker
El delantero marcó dos goles (The striker scored two goals.) - El lateral – Full-back / Wing-back
El lateral subió para atacar (The full-back pushed forward to attack.)

- Chutar – To shoot (the ball)
Chutó desde fuera del área (He shot from outside the box.) - Marcar (un gol) – To score (a goal)
España marcó en el minuto 89 (Spain scored in the 89th minute.) - Pasar el balón – To pass the ball
Le pasó el balón al delantero (He passed the ball to the striker.) - Regatear – To dribble past an opponent
Regateó a tres defensas (He dribbled past three defenders.) - Marcar de cabeza – To head the ball
Marcó de cabeza (He scored with a header.) - Parar – To stop
El portero paró el balón (The keeper stopped the ball.)

- Copa – Cup / Tournament Used for national or international competitions with a knockout format.
- El equipo ganó la Copa del Rey (The team won the King’s Cup.)
- España busca otra copa mundial (Spain is going for another World Cup.)
League Structure (Estructura de la liga)
In Spain, professional football is organized into divisions. Knowing these terms will help you follow team standings, promotions, and relegations and also help you speak Spanish about football like a pro.
- Primera División – First Division / Premier league
This is the highest level in Spanish football, also known as La Liga.
El Real Madrid juega en la Primera División (Real Madrid plays in the First Division.) - Segunda División – Second Division
The second tier of professional football. The top teams get promoted to Primera.
El equipo subió a Segunda este año (The team was promoted to the Second Division this year.) - Tercera División – Third Division
Traditionally the third level, many people refer to it informally as la Tercera.
Mi primo juega en un club de Tercera (My cousin plays for a Third Division club.) - Ascenso – Promotion
El equipo logró el ascenso a Segunda (The team earned promotion to Segunda Division.) - Descenso – Relegation
El club descendió a Tercera después de una mala temporada (The club was relegated to Tercera after a bad season.)
