A rallying cry (grito de guerra), very common across Spain before and during matches. is a chant filler, like olé, used for rhythm.

In Spain, professional football is organized into divisions. Knowing these terms will help you follow team standings, promotions, and relegations and also help you speak Spanish about football like a pro.

  • Primera DivisiónFirst Division / Premier league
    This is the highest level in Spanish football, also known as La Liga.
    El Real Madrid juega en la Primera División (Real Madrid plays in the First Division.)
  • Segunda DivisiónSecond Division
    The second tier of professional football. The top teams get promoted to Primera.
    El equipo subió a Segunda este año (The team was promoted to the Second Division this year.)
  • Tercera DivisiónThird Division
    Traditionally the third level, many people refer to it informally as la Tercera.
